A molar that cracks at dinner, a swollen jaw that wakes you up, a tooth knocked loose at a weekend game: dental emergencies don’t wait for the next open cleaning slot, and neither should you. Colonia Dental Associates holds time in the schedule for urgent cases, and for most emergencies during office hours we can see Woodbridge patients the same day they call.

Dr. Ashlee N. Apratim, D.M.D., and Dr. Gurjinder Singh, D.M.D., are both Associate Fellows of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, so root canals, extractions, and repairs to broken teeth are handled in-house instead of being referred out. Our office at 422 Fairview Avenue is in Colonia, part of Woodbridge Township itself, and most Woodbridge patients reach us in about 10 minutes.

What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

If a problem involves severe pain, swelling, bleeding that won’t stop, or a tooth that has been knocked out or broken, treat it as an emergency and call us. These are the situations Woodbridge patients call about most often:

  • Severe or throbbing tooth pain, especially pain that keeps you up at night
  • A knocked-out or loose adult tooth
  • A cracked, chipped, or broken tooth
  • An abscess, gum boil, or swelling in the jaw or face
  • A lost filling or crown, or a broken bridge
  • Bleeding from the gums or mouth that won’t slow down
  • Cuts or injuries to the lips, tongue, or cheeks

When to Go to the ER Instead

Some situations need a hospital before they need a dentist. Go straight to an emergency room for a suspected broken jaw, swelling that makes it hard to breathe or swallow, a high fever with facial swelling, or heavy bleeding after a serious fall or car accident. Nearby emergency departments for Woodbridge residents include JFK University Medical Center in Edison and RWJ University Hospital Rahway. Once you’ve been stabilized, call us so we can take care of the teeth themselves.

Emergency Dental Care for Woodbridge Patients

At an emergency visit, our first job is to stop the pain and protect the tooth. After that, we map out anything that still needs to be done. Depending on what we find, same-visit care can include:

  • Root canal treatment to relieve an infected or inflamed nerve
  • Emergency tooth extraction when a tooth is too damaged to save
  • Recementing a crown, or placing a temporary crown over a cracked tooth
  • Replacement fillings and bonding for chipped or broken teeth
  • Treating an abscess to relieve pressure and control infection
  • Reimplanting and stabilizing a knocked-out tooth

If a tooth can’t be saved, we’ll talk through replacement options at the same appointment, including dental implants near Woodbridge, so you aren’t left guessing about next steps.

What Happens When You Call

1. Call 732-381-7171. Tell our front desk what happened and when it started. We’ll ask a few quick questions to judge how urgent it is and, whenever possible, get you in that same day.

2. Exam and X-rays. Your dentist takes targeted X-rays, finds the source of the pain or damage, and explains what’s going on in plain terms, along with the cost, before any treatment starts.

3. Relief first. Many problems, from lost fillings to abscesses to knocked-out teeth, can be treated or stabilized at the same visit. If more work is needed, you’ll leave comfortable and with a clear plan for follow-up.

What to Do Before You Get to Our Office

Knocked-out tooth: Pick it up by the crown (the white part), not the root. If it’s dirty, rinse it gently with milk or water without scrubbing. Try to set it back in the socket and hold it in place, or keep it in a container of milk or your own saliva. Call us right away. A tooth has the best chance of being saved when it’s reimplanted within about 30 minutes.

Toothache: Rinse with warm water and floss gently to clear anything trapped around the tooth. Ibuprofen taken as directed on the package usually works best for dental pain, and a cold compress on the outside of your cheek can ease swelling. Never put aspirin directly on the gum.

Broken tooth or lost crown: Save any pieces and bring them with you, and avoid chewing on that side. Dental cement from a pharmacy can hold a crown in place temporarily until your appointment.

Swelling: Gum or facial swelling often signals an infection. Call us as soon as you notice it, and go to the ER if the swelling spreads toward your eye or neck or makes it hard to breathe or swallow.

Yes. We keep time open in the schedule for urgent cases and make every effort to see emergency patients the same day they call during office hours. Call 732-381-7171 as early in the day as you can so we can find the best opening. Our Colonia office is about 10 minutes from most of Woodbridge Township.

Often, yes, if you act fast. Handle the tooth only by the crown, rinse it gently if it’s dirty, and either place it back in the socket or keep it in milk or saliva. Get to our office as quickly as possible. The best results come when the tooth is reimplanted within about 30 minutes.

For tooth pain, a broken tooth, or a lost filling or crown, call an emergency dentist. Hospital emergency rooms can help with pain and infection but generally can’t repair teeth. Go to the ER instead if you have trouble breathing or swallowing, a possible broken jaw, bleeding you can’t control, or a high fever with facial swelling.

We’re closed Wednesdays, Sundays, and after hours. If the situation is life-threatening, go to the nearest emergency room. If the pain can wait until we open, manage it with ibuprofen taken as directed and a cold compress, then call 732-381-7171 first thing so we can fit you in.

A small chip with no pain can usually wait a few days, but a crack that hurts when you bite, a break that exposes the inside of the tooth, or a sharp edge cutting your tongue should be seen right away. Minor chips can often be repaired with bonding the same day, larger breaks may need a crown, and breaks that extend below the gum line may require extraction. Bring any fragments with you.
